MTV VMAs TAKE OVER NEW YORK

The 2006 MTV Video Music Awards took place without a hitch in New York’s Radio City Music Hall Thursday (August 31) night.

Rap diva Lil' Kim made a triumphant appearance in an orange jumpsuit and flanked by men dressed as prison guards. "The girl is back," Kim told a cheering crowd after stripping off a mock prison jumpsuit to reveal a black and gold pantsuit. "You can't keep a good bitch down," she added.

The rapper, whose real name is Kimberly Jones, was released from prison last month after serving time for perjury in a case involving a shootout between rival rappers in 2001 in New York. She was jailed last September and released in July.

Kanye West behaved, sticking to the words on the TelePrompTer while presenting video director Hype Williams with a Video Vanguard award for his work on videos featuring the Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Jay-Z and Mariah Carey. "If you want to be No. 1, you gotta work hard, you gotta pray hard and you gotta get Hype Williams," West said. Busta Rhymes and Spliff Star than performed a snippet of "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See," followed by Missy Elliott and Timbaland offering a similarly short version of "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)."

On a simultaneous online broadcast, MTV offered viewers not just a peak backstage at the Video Music Awards, but real-time behind-the-scenes access.

With more than 30 cameras, MTV's Overdrive Web site boasted an "uncensored" look at performers, presenters and stars as they made their way to the stage, exited with moonmen awards or powdered their noses in makeup rooms.

With two each, Blunt and Gnarls Barkley were the only artists to win more than one award. "You're Beautiful" also won for best cinematography, while Gnarls Barkley's summer smash "Crazy" won for best editing and best direction.

Other winners included the Black Eyed Peas for best hip-hop video with "My Humps," Kelly Clarkson for best female video with "Because of You," and Beyoncé featuring Slim Thug and Bun B. for “Check On It.”
