Rapper T.I, a multiple nominee and scheduled performer at the BET Hip-Hop Awards, was arrested just hours before show time on charges of illegally buying machine guns.
T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris, 27, was arrested by federal agents in an Atlanta shopping center parking lot Saturday and charged with possession of unregistered machine guns and silencers and possession of firearms by a convicted felon, the Associated Press reports. At the start of the BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta on Saturday night, federal authorities were executing a search warrant at his home. Special agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives spent most of Saturday afternoon at the College Park residence about 15 miles southwest of the city.
T.I. had nine nominations and ended up getting up two awards at the show, held in Atlanta.
On stage, rapper Common, who won the CD of the year honor along with T.I., raised up his trophy and said: "I salute my guy, T.I., who also won, wherever he is."
