2008 T.I.

"It's been outstanding." --T.I. on 2008

Claim to fame:  Overcoming adversity

2008 didn't look too appealing for ATL rapper T.I.  Not only was he still dealing with the loss of his best friend, but he was facing possible jail time on felony gun charges.

Isn't it funny how things can turn around?  What Tip didn't know is that 2008 would become one of the best years to date.

Right now, T.I. is so hot, he can't be touched. He has a huge album (that helped Atlantic Records become the first major record label to surpass CD sales by their overwhelming digital sales), a potentially bigger tour, Grammy nominations, movie deals and a slew of companies willing to pony up his price to have him endorse their products.

Certainly not the swagger of a man facing prison.

A year ago, T.I. was so hot, he couldn't be touched. That's what corporations like GMC were thinking when they severed any ties they had with him in light of his arrest on felony gun charges. He lost millions in potential income.

But hundreds of hours of community service later, everyone — including Tip — is much more optimistic about his earning potential.

Fifteen hundred of community hours proved to be the silver lining in the year.

He partnered with former U.S. congressman and United Nations ambassador Andrew Young in an upcoming anti-weapons documentary, Walking With Guns.

The documentary chronicles Tip's journey across the country as he visits a New York rehabilitation hospital to speak with paralyzed victims of gun violence, offer guidance to young people about crime and travel with a former gang member who has since become a social activist.

Just before that he partnered with local Atlanta station WSB-TV for their Crimestoppers campaign.

Stepping forward to spread awareness and encourage people to call the city's hotline with anonymous tips that could help protect families and bring criminals to justice, he is featured in the station's new public service announcement.

"Hey, what's happening y'all? Some people call me Tip, but this is about another kind of tip that could help our mothers, our sisters, our brothers and our fathers to help get the perpetrators who commit crimes against them off the streets  " T.I. says in the video.

He may very well have to start serving time in jail come March, but it doesn't look like it will stop him from making moves.

"Presumably, while I'm there, I'll be able to strategize my comeback," Tip told reporters recently. "All those days will be spent speaking to people who are interested in being in the T.I. business. Preparing myself for the days those doors open, when I put my feet back on the ground of the free world. It's just months of planning. It's just a long time to roll the project out. I ain't gonna just be sitting still doing nothing. The wheels will be turning, just the car ain't going nowhere."

While still able to move relatively freely, Tip is working. He's already begun recording his next album, there's the possibility of a tour, and he would like to sneak in a movie.
