CHRONIC MAGAZINE

Like many of his peers – Eminen, 50 Cent, Ludacris, Fat Joe – Ghostface is bringing forth his latest creation, the Theodore Unit. Each member – Crime Life, Cappadonna, Shawn Wigs, Du-Lilz, Trife Da God, Solomon Childs – was handpicked by Ghost himself.

In typical Wu fashion, there is a meaning behind the name. According to Ghostface, “I named it Theodore because it’s Thinkers and Doers. Nobody that is not thinking for themselves or for the team, I don’t even need them around me, ‘cause it’s a waste of energy. So I just broke it down to Thinkers and Doers. We gonna get this paper.”

Recently, Chronic caught up with three members of the group, Wigs, Trife and Solomon, to talk about their debut mixtape, 718, and their new found family.

Chronicmagazine.com: We got an advance copy of the album and I already have a couple of favorites on it. Tell the readers about the album.

Wigs : Some of it is just bits and pieces of what was left over from [Ghostface’s] Pretty Toney album. When we decided to put together the mixtape, we all threw in some extras. “Pass the Mic” is one of my favorite joints. We all got a chance to do something. It was a beautiful thing.

Trife: My favorite joints [are] “Punch In Punch Out,” “Wicked With Lead” and “Smith Brothers.”

Solomon Childs : My favorite is “Be My Girl.” When I wrote that song, I was trying to get this girl to be with me.

Chronicmagazine.com: Did it work?

Solomon Childs : No it didn’t work.

Chronicmagazine.com: Did she know that song was for her?

Solomon Childs : Yeah she knew it was for her. She was an older woman. I was really feeling her like that. I wrote the song after the situation, but I told myself that I might as well do it because exceptions come with rejections.

Chronicmagazine.com: It’s all good. You’re doing big things now.

Solomon Childs : (laughs) Yeah. She’s cool though.

Chronicmagazine.com: How did you all pick what music was going on the album?

Wigs : Ghost did most of that. He was the granddaddy of all of that. He just put the puzzle together.

Chronicmagazine.com: How is it working with Ghost?

Trife: We knew each other before this rap shit. It’s cool working with him. I worked with on the Pretty Toney album and the Bulletproof Wallets album, so we have good chemistry together.

Chronicmagazine.com: Looks like you all stayed away from the big name producers.

Wigs : Yeah. It’s unnecessary to do that at this point of time.

Chronicmagazine.com: Do you think certain people’s success has a lot to do with production?

Wigs : Yeah. It’s all politics. People go after certain producers because they know that these producers know big people and big people play their music because money is being passed around. It shouldn’t be that way.

Chronicmagazine.com: How is being a group this big? Are there a lot of scheduling conflicts and disagreements?

Solomon Childs: We argue like sisters and fight like brothers. But it’s a good thing. I love my brothers. We’re holding it down. We know we’re the only ones who has each other’s back in this crazy game. In order for us to get to the farthest point, we’re going to have to stick with each other and by each other.

Trife: It’s all good. I’ve grown with these brothers and learned how to do good music and just vibe with them. It’s like a family.

Wigs : Yeah. It’s just like a family. We all have our ups and downs. For the most part, everything is working out good. Everyone is eager and anxious to make everything work.

Chronicmagazine.com: Did you all grow up together?

Trife: Ghost put the crew together.

Solomon Childs: In
Staten Island you can grow up with each other, but you don’t even have to know that dude. You can see someone all the time and know that his name is Barry, but never talk to him. So, yeah. We grew up with each other.

Chronicmagazine.com: When did you [all] get in the game?

Trife: I’ve been doing rap since I was 12.

Chronicmagazine.com: How old are you now?

Trife: I’m 24, but I didn’t really take it serious until high school. I did it here and there. I used to watch Video Music Box and say, ‘Yo, that’s what I want to do. I want to write rhymes.’ I had my little keyboard in front of the TV.

Chronicmagazine.com: So what’s making you take it serious now?

Trife: I can’t even explain it. There’s just something there. It’s a dream and I just have to go for it. I said, ‘Fuck everything. This is what I’m going to do.’ You’re only going to get out what you put into it. That’s why I stay on my grind. I stay hungry. I stay writing. I stay around positive brothers. I try to stay away from the negative shit. I just keep grinding.

Solomon Childs: I got into the rap game around ’98. I was on Cappadonna’s first album, The Pillage. I was on the title track, “Blood on Blood War,” and “PumpYour Fist.”

Chronicmagazine.com: So you’ve been doing this for a minute too?

Solomon Childs: Yeah, but it hasn’t been consistent. So, I can’t really claim all that time.

Chronicmagazine.com: Is it going to be different for you this time around?

Solomon Childs: Oh yeah. Definitely. The last time I got caught up in the hood. I was doing the rap thing, but I really wasn’t. People were telling me that I was nice, but I never really paid attention to it. I was doing my thing – motorcycles and the fast life. But, now I’m trying to make sure that I get that paper so I can feed my family.

Chronicmagazine.com: So your family is your main focus now?

Solomon Childs: Yeah.

Wigs: I started out with [Cappadonna]. I was in a group called Othorized Fam. It was just four members. I used to rhyme with Cappadonna’s brother. We started fucking with Cap when he did The Pillage.

Chronicmagazine.com: Is Cappa still driving taxis?

Wigs : (laughs) No. He’s just crazy. He’s St. Lunatics.
